Many students joined the Card game Club thinking it was going to be all fun and games. Well, it was fun and games but the students also found out how card games can be a good way of practicing conversational English.
For starters, students had to explain the rules of the games to each other in English. They also had to master - remember and use them during the game - the card game jargon. Best of all, conversation flowed freely during the games because it would have been extremely awkward not to say anything while playing.
Professor Tom Carlaw brought a set of awe-inspiring poker chips to the club. For many students, it was their first time to touch poker chips. It was interesting to say the least.
"I bet ten thousand."
"I call your ten thousand and raise you ten thousand more."
"How much was your bet?"
"I fold."
"I think you are bluffing."
"Let me see your cards."
