English: Not just an object to study

To learn a foreign language more easily, the recommended method is that we listen to music and sing songs. So, for improving our English skill, the pop song contest was held in the conference hall on Thursday July 16, 2010 at 6 PM.

Team New Zealand, USA, Australia, Canada, and Ireland participated in this contest. All the teams did their best to perform perfectly. And one student from the department of music and two Filipinos took a role as judges. The winning team was selected by the judges and the vote of the teams.

The first stage was Team New Zealand. Their songs were "A Whole New World" and "Dancing Queen". Team New Zealand’s blue T-shirts were refreshing to look at. Their performance started in a calm mood. In contrast, their second song evoked a very active atmosphere.

The next stage was Team Australia. The first song "Flying Without Wings" was a ballad. Team members Seul and Jong-Ryeol sang a sweet duet. The next song was "Hey Mickey". "Hey Mickey" is a cheering song. Five girls showed us a fantastic performance. They were pretty.

Third, Team Canada came on the scene.
Their first song was 'She's Gone'. First three people came out of the stage and they acted out a funny situation. They sang and danced at the same time so the audience paid attention to them. Although they did not have enough practice, they made a fantastic performance and their performance was different from other teams.

The fourth to go was the USA team.
There was beautiful harmony in their team. In their performance, we felt their passion and youthfulness. They tried to sing a difficult rap so the audience was surprised. The 3 boys who sang a rap came to the audience and made an exciting performance. Lastly they sang the OST of the Musical Hairspray with dance. Their passionate performance was really good.

The performance of team Ireland was the grand final of the pop song contest.
Team Ireland sang a song while they danced to Honey Honey by ABBA and Upside Down by A-teens. They made a suitable dance for an active song. They chose two rhythmical songs, and as a result, the atmosphere of the pop song contest heated up. Especially professor Irving who is the homeroom teacher actively took part in the performance of team Ireland. This situation was very well-received by almost all students who were sitting in the conference hall.

Finally, Team Ireland’s eleven teammates fell into chime with their professor and the cheerful music received first prize in this contest. Team Australia and team Canada shared second place, and team USA and team New Zealand shared third prize.

From this, we could find the hidden talent and a new aspect of students. Even though in the process of preparing for the pop song contest, almost all teams had many difficulties, after finishing this contest, it seemed to bring teams together. Besides, the pop song contest offered a chance to easily approach English with confidence. The great fruit of this contest was that many students of the GEO program came to think of English as a language that people use in daily life, not just an object to study.
