Class 2-2 with Prof. Tom and TA Angelo
On the first day, all the students and TAs gathered in one place and had an in Korean. This orientation covered what the program was about the different events . This was the last time that the TAs could explain anything in Korean to the students! From now on, for four weeks straight, students had to abide by the rule of the GEO program and use English only.
After the Korean orientation, all the students, TAs and professors gathered in the Global Lounge where an opening ceremony took place. This ceremony served the purpose of saying good bye to Korean and hello to English. From the moment GEO started, everything was done in English.
Professor Tom taught us in the morning, focusing on real conversations. We learned how to talk like native English speakers using idioms; it was really useful. Tom explained the material through a Power Point presentation and afterwards provided us with time to practice using idioms with our partner. Lastly, we reviewed idioms through games. Much appreciation is given to Tom for teaching in a lively manner since morning classes can be boring when we're all tired. We also got to know each other very quickly even though it was only our first time and first week.
The afternoon class was then taught by Professor Jerry. In his class we learned English through textbooks and prints. Jerry would correct our mistakes when we were practicing. This process and way of teaching allowed us to learn how to speak and write English correctly. We were able to take on a fun learning approach through interactive group activities and games.
Different social activities were also organized in helping to relieve our stress, while field trips were planned so we can apply what we learned in the "real" world. Although we can be shy and afraid of making mistakes, while learning and speaking English, we have great professors constantly encouraging us. With their passion for teaching and seeing their students succeed, we are able to build on our confidence! There is an old saying, "Well begun is half done." Let's enjoy ourselves and have fun!
