Following our first article about our Buddies from Abroad (BFA), we have another foreigner friend who wants to impart her experience during her first week in the GEO program. Christine Huang, our friend from Taiwan, discloses her thoughts about GEO's BFA program
Christine shares "This Wednesday was my first chance to meet with the students and professor that I was assigned to, Class 2-1. I got the chance to introduce myself, my school and my country. This is in order to let them know a little bit about me and my background. It was really fun to chat with students. However, after my presentation, I was very nervous when I was in the “hot seat". Since students were very curious about the difference between Taiwan and Korea, they were very active in raising questions. We had an interactive discussion. I also prepared few souvenirs from Taiwan for the students to impart some Taiwan spirit with them.
After the class, I had set up a lot of individual appointments with students so that we both could have a schedule to follow for the rest of the week.
For this week, I already did a few appointments and I thought the idea of setting individual meeting was the greatest idea ever! BFAs like me get the chance to meet new Korean friends, and at the same time, GEO students can practice their English not just in the class but during their meetings with the BFAs.
On the day when we had our BFA meeting, I was quite nervous at first. I was concerned about fulfilling my duties in assisting my professor and being able to help/accompany the students. However, once I got into the classroom and finally got to meet them, I felt relaxed and comfortable. The students were so nice and willing to learn new things.
After these first few individual meetings with the students, I think I already have made some good friends. We got to hang out on weekends, share our thoughts about things and such.
