Be Passionate toward the World(Level 3-A Speech Contest Final)

The place was a bit small. The air wasn’t fresh enough because there was no open window. In spite of all these obstacles, the judges─prof. Steve Coombs, prof. Ari Bent and prof. Jerry Tumilson─ were serious, and the audience was attentive. The flow of the contest was so smooth that the audience couldn’t but pay their full attention to presentations.

Nine teams from three classes of level 3 competed with each other for the prizes. Each team had chosen their favorite countries and introduced various aspects of those countries. Some talked about tourist attractions, while others talked about problems which we must help to be solved. This kind of balance among each presentation was more impressive than anything.

Countries chosen by our contestants included Cambodia, Russia, Italy, China, Egypt, United Kingdom and South Africa—from almost every continent! Particularly, the first and second presentations-about Cambodia and Russia- grabbed my attention for they gave several possible solutions, not just listing problems and matters.

One more: I was truly fascinated by the presentation program which the team introducing Italy(Venice) used. Their presentation was genuine and brand new. Moreover, they also presented variety of information about their topic, based on diverse dimensions.

To my surprise, most teams mentioned environmental issues. I presume that it shows increasing interests on environmental problems such pollutions, desertification and greenhouse effect. They looked very eager to provide possible solutions of their own─some of them actually require us much effort─, and thus I thought sooner or later it would be time for us to take action.

I assume that it was very hard for judges to decide which team would win the prize. If I had been among judges, I would have given up making decisions. It was felt rather harsh that only three teams would win the prizes. Hence, I’d like to give my BIG hand to all the contestants. Guys, you were really fantastic! You did do a great job!

Among the audience, it was very hard for me to sit on a chair for a couple of hours without making a fuss. Unlike me, however, other audience was certainly attentive: that was the most impressive thing of all. Truth to be told, the way to deliver their presentations was obviously similar since theirs solely focused on introducing a country, and that somewhat bored me. If they had had a little more time to prepare, there would have been more breathing moment for participants. No matter how hard time they had to go through, nonetheless, I insist all the participants be truly thankful for ILEC rather than complain about their hardships. Thank you, ILEC, for giving us such a wonderful opportunity and precious memory!
