GEO 8 Club Activities

GEO 8 is very dynamic this time. Aside from the regular classes we have on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we have a a variety of clubs to choose from. My partner Seong Moon and I will the talk about the clubs we belong. We also interviewed students who belong to other clubs and asked what they do in their clubs.

Book Club

Hi, I’m Seong Moon, I am going to briefly introduce the book club, it is the club I belong to. The Book Club discusses about a specific book on a weekly basis. Going into the specifics, members usually talk about book characters, interesting or highlight events in the story, unfamiliar words and more. In addition to that, club members sometimes get to play simple games to socialize with each other while the Teaching Assistants (TAs) help and advice us on the correct usage of English expressions.

Nowadays, we are discussing ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell. Of course, members have to read the book before club sessions. At first, I thought ‘Discussing in English will be difficult for me.’ However, the T.A.s facilitated the discussions so that members would be able to talk easily - making me capable of expressing my views without hesitation with almost all of the members. Right now, things are becoming somewhat difficult to discuss in-depth. But members are practicing and are improving their speaking skills so that they would be able to discuss issues easily in the future.

It is always fun to read books, giving me more information and making my imaginations work. I thank Book club for being such a good club.

Art Club

Today, I will introduce one of GEO clubs especially 'Art club' I am Ju Ryoung. I am attending Art club this semester. In the Art club, we do lots of activities such as drawing, taking pictures, searching information about famous artists and so on. Every week, we have one main keyword and we have to explain our artwork using that word. For example, last week, the keyword was 'Art'. So, after finishing our artwork, we have to explain the work using the word 'Art'. In these activities, we can learn about art and English words at the same time.

Through Art club, I felt like I developed much more than before. I widened my knowledge about art and learned how to express my thoughts creatively. I can relieve stress through art too.

If you want to join the Art club, do not hesitate! You will not regret ever.

Pop Song Club

I interviewed a student who is participating in the GEO English Pop Song Club. He said, Through this club, I’m able to learn correct pronunciation of a word as well as the pop song. The Pop Song Club members sing along after the TA corrects the member’s pronunciation. In addition to that, members can learn a pop song’s background as well. Finally, he expressed a weak point about the Pop Song Club, We still feel kind of shy to sing along in front of members because we don’t have any time to socialize with each other. Yet, they have a plan to sing at the Cheese & Wine party!

This makes me excited for the upcoming cheese and wine party. I’ll be waiting for your pop song piece =)

Belly Dancing Club

“When the GEO Belly Dancing Club’s TA came to advertise her club in my class, I was so impressed by her belly dancing expertise. In the Belly Dancing Club, members can learn not only belly dancing skills but also English listening skills by following the instruction. For an hour, members have 5 minutes to stretch their body, have 45 minutes to learn belly dancing and have 10 minutes to cool down.

I think belly dancing is one of the best ways to improve one’s figure. In addition to that, if you join the Belly Dancing Club, you can improve your English skill as well! Learning English in a fun and healthy way is great.

Internet Club

Do you have troubles using internet in your research? The GEO Internet Club will definitely help you. This club can greatly assist you when you face difficulties in searching English websites. In addition, the Internet Club members can learn different ways to handle unfamiliar English websites. The T.A in this club is an Information System graduate school student. He could help the members very well. Social networking sites are also part of Internet club, students will learn how to make an account in Social networking sites like facebook, and twitter. Increasing your social network and enhancing your English writing skill is nice to learn in this club.

Furthermore, club members also share useful websites they know in class, in this way students are could still socialize with club other members.

Toastmaster Club

The Toastmaster Club is a club for students who are afraid of presenting or speaking English in front of other people. In this club, students present about weekly topic in English in front of other students and TAs. Through this process, students can learn how to present well and build their self-confidence. And also, it helps students to overcome the difficulties they encounter when they present.

The Radio Club Team. All outputs made by the Radio Research Club team is used for the GEO Radio shows, airing Mondays to Fridays 5 to 6pm and 7 to 8pm in the GEO Global Lounge

TV Sitcom / Movie Club

The TV Sitcom and Movie Club is one of the popular GEO clubs. In every class, students watch the newest dramas such as Gossip girl, White collar, The Mentalist, Ghost whisperer and so on. Through these media, students can take an interest in English and learn new English expressions. T.A’s also conduct activities related to the theme of the tv sitcom/ movie for that schedule which makes it fun and interesting.
