English Only!!

“G.E.O.” means ‘Global English Outreach’. Students attending this program should use English all the time. To be frank with you, it is so difficult because we are Korean. However if you come to our dormitory, you can listen to students speaking English to each other. As you know, it requires much effort. Fortunately, all students look so happy while trying to speak English!

One student said that “It is very important to use English all day long, even though we are not good at speaking English.” It is true. Language exist to communicate with others, therefore if we cannot speak English it is useless. Our method of leaning English is wrong, because most people who learned English for several years cannot speak English at all. They can just say ‘Hello’ or ‘Hi’ when they meet a foreigner. In a sense the G.E.O program is innovative and helps us to get more confident using English.

Another student said that “A few students speak Korean in their rooms, but I think that it is not good.” She also emphasized: “The most important thing is our passion to speak English wherever we go during the G.E.O program, even though we are poor at using English. Knowing language means knowing culture. So if we know a lot of vocabulary, we have to use it. Memorizing how to ride a bicycle is not important, we have to just ride on bicycle. English is the same. We just have to speak!”

There is a yellow penalty card system. Students can be given a yellow card when they speak in Korean. The team to which the person belongs is also given a minus point. Hence it motivates students to speak English all the time. Of course there is no CCTV, teachers can’t watch all students. However using the yellow card system gives students responsibility.

I heard that when learning a language, speaking 10 sentences incorrectly is more effective than speaking just 1 sentence correctly. It is absolutely true. Most Korean people are afraid of making mistakes. Fortunately during the G.E.O. program, we enjoy speaking English, so we will conquer English soon!
