Sports Club

Prof. Steve Coombs, moderator of Sports Club with his student

Can you possibly imagine going to a basketball court to meet a man dressed in a soccer jersey and trekking shoes with soccer socks, while holding on to a volleyball and a badminton racquet? Well, that is what Steve, the moderator of the G.E.O. Program’s Sports Club, looked like when I met him for the interview. From England, Steve has been in Korea for just 18 months; he actually came to CUK only a few months ago. As a “travel-maniac” who had traveled to over 90 different countries, he wanted to combine his beloved hobby with his long-time dream of teaching by teaching abroad. That brought him to Korea, where he taught in the English Village (located in Incheon) before joining the G.E.O. program. So, what does Steve think about his very own Sports Club? Here are his answers to some of my questions:

1. What is the purpose of the Sports Club?

 When asked this question, Steve immediately placed his hand on my shoulder while putting on a big smile. Steve, while clearly understanding the importance of academics, believes that education (especially Korean education) needs balance. Especially during an intensive camp like G.E.O., a little breathing space is almost indispensable for more positive results. He acutely pointed out that some students who study “too hot” put themselves in the danger of falling asleep during class. The purpose of the Sports Club is then, to help students maintain a healthy study habit by allowing them to release some of their mental strain.

Let's play together~in English!

1. Hye-Young Lee, a freshman of Songsim Campus (Human Science):

- Why did you join the Sports Club?
 “Because the music club was full”, she joked at first. The reason for her joining the Sports Club was extremely simple, and it actually made a lot of sense; she liked sports.
- How do you like it so far?
 She said that it was very fun. She especially enjoys the fact that everyone plays with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.

2. Jin Choi, a senior of Songsim Campus (English Language and Culture / Management):

- Why did you join the Sports Club?

 Jin is a huge fan of basketball and soccer, and that’s exactly why he joined the Sports Club: he simply wanted to play his favorite sports. He also told me that he enjoyed hanging out with people, and he thinks that this club will present him with many opportunities to do just that.

- How do you like it so far?

 He said that the Sports Club is very enjoyable. He especially likes the fact that he is able to meet students from other classes. According to him, the Sports Club helps him to stay mentally relaxed and physically (literally) awake as well.
