Student's Blog: The First Time I Felt Grown Up

Two of Professor Stephen's students share a few of their realizations and insights with you.

I first felt the feeling that I have grown up all by myself. In the past years, I just noticed something new like checking of the ID card. When I first went to a bar, I just passed after my ID card was checked. I still can’t believe that growing up was unnoticeable to me but I think legally and socially I can recognize that growing up is coming to me. Prior to that, I had never felt a sense of freedom that people feel when they are an adult. But, now I can feel that. I also realized that I am an adult mentally because when I was young I could not control my anger. At that time I got angry easily, and I did not care about others. But this time I have the right personality to do what I want. I don’t lose my temper easily. I am grown up because I feel better when I think again to see if my actions will be good or bad before doing it. It is all about the changes I felt when I was growing up.

The first time I felt like an adult was when I saw my father and mother looking older than when I was a high school student.
When I was a high school student, I couldn’t see my parents’ every day because I had to study in school and in the library for the college entrance exam. But after about 4 years, when I finished the military service period we were on a family trip to Hong Kong, I realized my parents became smaller and powerless than they were 4 years ago. They had more wrinkles and white hair. So I thought that earning money for me made my parents older. After that I promised myself not to be dependent on my parents and become a ‘grown up’.
Actually, I’m not keeping my promise. This semester’s fee was paid by my parents. Of course, because of the reason that I am a senior, so having a part time job is difficult for me. It is uncomfortable for me so I thought that if I can’t earn the money, I will just do my best in studying to get a good grade. I hope I can get a scholarship and relieve my parents.
