“Thinking
outside the shoe”
This year’s first colloquium was held on
May 2nd and the guest speaker was none other than Jessica Cox the
motivational speaker. To describe her, she is young pretty woman without arms,
and a brave woman. Firstly, Prof Nico addressed the welcoming speech then,
Jessica Cox gave her appearance for the audience which made everyone surprised.
All GEO students were present for the event and were eagerly waiting for the
speech to commence. Well, it was time for Jessica Cox to start and there she
started where she took everyone’s attention by mentioning the way Koreans
greet. Everyone was fascinated by that statement because she meant that she had
no arms to do the handshake so it was good for her to bow as Koreans do it
naturally.
I was surprised to see a woman who was
energetic, attractive and a woman who was pretty. She was an inspiration to all
of us, basically she inspired my life at a time where I was facing obstacles
and I was in a state with many storms in my life. I am quite sure she was
capable of inspiring many others. She went on explaining how she spent her
childhood with many challenges and how she faced many difficulties. It had been
a challenge for her to study in university and she was a motivated person, what
I saw from her is that she was an optimistic person. She told us how to think
outside the shoe and the desire in doing things. Actually, from her speech what
was astonishing was that she had all jumped the hurdles in life by winning all
challenges. She had become a pilot and in the video, they showed how she was
doing her job. There was lot of humor when she was speaking, going all over the
stage. All was amazed the way she tied the lace of her shoes by using her feet.
Then, she asked someone to volunteer to open the can by using his/her feet. A
Korean student volunteered, but in the end she did for him. Last but not the least;
her motivational speech was encouraging for her self-confidence and her faith
in God. She was a courageous woman that anything in this world is possible.
Jessica Cox is truly an inspiration to all of us at a time, where we get
discouraged when we are facing hard times but she proved that without her arms
she has come a long way. Jessica’s husband has been a great supporter to her
and in the end everyone was amazed. I was fortunate to get a photograph with
this wonderful person and giving her high five to her feet.
