GEO 25 and Food

Food Culture

No matter where you are in the world one of the things humans must do to survive is eat. However, there is a difference between just eating because your body needs it versus actually enjoying what you eat. As Korean culture spreads around the globe more people are becoming exposed to Korean cuisine. I am from across the world, more specifically Texas, and even there there are a variety of Korean restaurants to chose from. Having tasted a few Korean dishes there I was eager to actually try Korean food in Korea. I just have to say I was not disappointed in any way. Us Texans love a good barbeque and therefore I felt a little disappointed that I would have to say goodbye to one of my favorite meals for so long. But fear not because Korean barbeque is just as delicious. Much like in a barbeque in Texas, which is often accompanied by side dishes such as vegetables and bread, samgyeopsal is often served with side dishes as well. You get lettuce to build a lettuce wrap plus hot sauce, rice, and a variety of vegetables to fill it up. Samgyeopsal is great for dinner with friends and it’s always fun to grill your own meat.

Another favorite dish of mine is chicken noodle soup, so when I tried dak kalguksu for the first time I was delighted. Since the weather has become colder dak kalguksu is a great way to stay healthy and keep warm. The flavorful broth instantly spreads warmth throughout your body, while; the noodles and chicken provide substance. It is also a great dish to share with friends and enjoy on a rainy day.

Delicious food is found all around the world, all you have to do is be willing to give dishes a chance. Even when you feel you can never find a similar taste to your favorite food back home you will be surprised when you have an open mind. Who knows, you might even find your new favorite dish.
