There are many movies, full of fresh ideas, novel stories,
and great new actors. It’s very different from the movies that we usually
meet. As you know, nowadays, many multiplex is in name only. They only
show some movies which are made by famous director and big company, or
performed by movie stars, so that they can make money.
Cinema audiences have really limited options. If you are sick
of this situation and want to watch something new to develop your eyes for
watching movies, how about going to the film festival?
6, October,2013, I was in Busan International Film
Festival. And I saw a very attractive movie.
I want to introduce IDA to you, because it's really
different from normal movies (I mean, the movies that multiplexes show), I
think watching IDA will be something to you. So, I’m going to introduce
'IDA'-directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, who is a very famous director in Poland.
This is main plot of ‘IDA’:
Brought up by convent nuns and about to take her religious
vows, Anna goes to see her only living relative, Aunt Wanda. Her aunt reveals
Anna is Jewish and her real name is “Ida”. Both women start a journey to
uncover their family story and find out who they really are.
“This film brings a very aesthetic experience with stunning
visual images in each shot, as if presenting a flow of beautiful still
pictures. The location of the main character in the frame is off-center even in
close-ups. Likewise, in two-shots the characters take only a certain part of
the frame. This contradicts standard beliefs about screen composition and is
also linked to the faltering lives of the characters. Similar to the road movie
genre, this film’s two women characters show a stark contrast. But when their
independent journeys combine into one, the ripple effect becomes gigantic
enough to overturn their destiny. The last shot involving Ida brings a question
about something beyond religion and love.” (Excerpt from biff homepage)
