GEO 10's Closing Ceremony

As quickly as it opened GEO 10 had come to a smooth close last February 18, 2011. The two-week camp ended successfully with Jason Ham, the camp manager, as the emcee.

Speeches rendered by selected GEO 10 students and the announcement of the winners for the X League and Z League's Team Country Presentation kept the students at the edge of their seats.

In the X League, Team Puerto Rico came in first and in the Z League, Team Samoa was the victor! Aside from the points for this final team competition, added points were given to each team who won special awards.

The much awaited GEO Cup Winners were also announced without further a due and the winners for X and Z Leagues are...

Special presentations from the Tuesday and Thursday Band Club entertained the students as the ceremony proceeded and in the end, Professor Irving gave everyone an unforgettable lesson about life in his farewell speech.

Professor Irving Gussow is a kind, funny and supportive professor. As he bid farewell to CUK, he left to his students the values, morals, and confidence in not only speaking English but also in facing every challenge that may come in their lives. Thank you very much Professor and Be Well! ^_^

With that, this short yet unforgettable winter camp ended with tears and laughter as everyone bid good bye to their newly found friends; hoping to see each other again and excited for the coming Spring Semester to open.

A quick look at the Photography and Card Game Club

Hello. I am In Kyng. I lost the game in the class. So as punishment, I had to write this article ^_^

Let me introduce my club. My Tuesday club is Photography club. In the club, we talk about photography. I thought taking pictures is just pressing the button but I was wrong. Taking pictures is a kind of art and we need some tips to take good pictures.

My first impression of the GEO program

When I got admitted to CUK after taking the Korean SAT, I saw the information about GEO. I just thought it is similar to high school classes so I registered but the special thing about it is that everyone should converse only in English. As part of the GEO Program, I also have to live with a roommate who is from the Philippines. Fortunately, the program started very well.

What are things we learn in GEO?

If someone asks me that question, I will answer immediately, "There are many opportunities for us to build our confidence through the individual and team presentation. Beyond learning English grammar, I really learned a lot about speaking English in everyday conversation. That's my major learning in the GEO.

Meet Professor Jason Ham

Student : What is your best experience in GEO?

Jason : When I taught 1-1 class in GEO 9, the class did better than the other not just individually but also as a team.

S : Who is the most impressive student in GEO 10?

J : In GEO 10, I was so busy and the time was too short to choose just one student. So I try to focus on my class and all the students are really good!

S : When was the happiest time in your life?

J : "Being a father" is the best time in my life. After becoming a father, I got more responsibility being the head of the household.

S : Why did you decide to teach in CUK?

J : If someone is an English major in the US, it is very hard to get a job. In my experience, I saw the advertisement in the newspaper. The ad says, "Wanna teach in KOREA? Apply to our university." So I did apply and I got the job! So I'm here now!

S : What is your first impression about teaching in CUK?

J : When I started at CUK, I didn’t have much University experience, so I tended to over-prepare and follow the textbook quite closely. It was a scary period of time…

S : What is your expectation of the students?

J : I want all students in CUK to gain more confidence and become leaders in the future.

S : What do you think about the Korean students' attitude?

J : I absolutely love working with Korean students. For the most part, they are phenomenal learners. Every once in a while, you get students in class who are overworked or apathetic. They can suck your energy out, but you try not to let it get to you too much. I like teaching students who smile a lot and apply themselves to tasks with a positive attitude.

A Battle to Test Team Strength and Cooperation!

X League's Sports Night!

X League’s Sports Night started on the evening of February 14^th. The event was held in the gym. The X league consists of the countries: Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and India. There were four games namely the Shooting Game, Jump and Get In, Flip Flip, and Basketball Race.

As a result India won the First Place, Second is Bermuda, Third is Jamaica, and Fourth is Puerto Rico.

First is the Shooting Game.

The Shooting Game's objective is to shoot as many balls in the ring as possible without leaving the fixed position marked as "X" for 2minutes.

Each Team has 8 members to participate in the game including 5 shooters and 3 rebounders. Most importantly, there should have at least 2 female participants. India won the first place with the score of 38. Jamaica was the second placer followed by Bermuda and Puerto Rico.

Team work in the Jump and Get In Game ^_^

The second event was called Jump and Get In Game. Participants have to jump one by one to get in the square. The challenge is that once they got in the square, they could not move anymore, or else they would be out. Only the first two players can jump and turn around.

The team with the most people to get in the square is the winner. The estimated time for this event is 15 – 20 minutes.

1st: India

2nd: Puerto Rico

3rd: Bermuda

4th: Jamaica

Students get ready for Flip Flip!

The third event is called Flip - Flip Game.

Flip Flip Game's objective is to flip the opposite team's color papers according to their team's color papers for 2 minutes.

For each team, all members should participate in the game. In the tournament, teams competing were Bermuda versus India and Puerto Rico versus Jamaica. India and Jamaica won in their respective match. For the final round, India won over Jamaica .

When we played this game, there were fierce fighings. But after the game has finished, we apologized to each other.

4th: Puerto Rico

The ultimate technique to win the Basketball Race Game

For the fourth event, we had the Basketball race Game. It was played for 10minutes.

The mechanics were:

1. All five teams will compete at the same time.

2. Two members will have to transport the basketball from one side of the court to the other (HALF COURT ONLY), and back to the starting line, without using their hands (note: members can only use their chest, back, or whatever parts of their body BUT NOT HANDS!)

3. After getting back to the starting line, first two members should tag the next member on the line, and the next pair will have to race until all members have finished their turns.

4. If a pair drops the ball, cross the starting line before they get tagged, or use their hands, they have to go back to the starting line.

5. Whoever finishes the race at the least time possible wins the game.

India won this game.

Puerto Rico's Great Ladies and Gentlemen

Professor Roger is really fun and warm. He especially emphasizes teamwork and always encourages our Team. Also, in order to motivate us all, he usually lets us listen to music and play games. I often thought that he is a music lover. As expected, he leads the Music Club. Professor Roger said “Believe in yourself, you have the power to be good English speakers.”

Our Team’s Official Fight Song Title is by Queen – “We Are The Champion”.

Teaching Assistant Regina is very kind. She encourages and helps us. Thank you very much!

Our Leader really has leadership. Also, she is very shrewd and she always looks confident. All the other members are also good. All members have the passion and personality.

Oh! Now, Team Puerto Rico has the number one position. Delighted to hear the happy news, today me and many of my fellow members will submit bonus points and soon the score will change. Don't take any wooden nails! Every team is trying hard to win; they are playing for keeps. After constant effort, we will finally be successful. We shall rack up victory in the Team Competitions!

Thoughts about GEO

This course is useful. Frankly, I don't have many friends because of my shy personality. However, I met a lot of nice people thanks to this Program. Also, I often feel nervous during conversations (both in English and in Korean) but during the GEO Program, my tension somewhat melted away while I converse with other people.

Preparation for the coming semester. Honestly, I feel so tired because of our daily schedule and too many presentations. Maybe I became more tired because after the College Scholastic Ability Test, I took a rest for a long time. But then, there may be many lessons and presentations in the coming semester so I might be able to adapt more quickly.

To learn various things. While researching for our Team Presentation, I learned to study Puerto Rico's History; Food; and etc. We were able to learn lots of information.

Many thoughts. Actually, most people are scared to communicate with foreigners but we have to communicate with foreigners because we need to explain to them about the Korean history and of course, many other things. Thanks to this program, I thought of my English ability. Frankly, I think Grammar was just not my thing in my school days. I only study hard to receive tolerable grade and so I thought reading is better. And when I was a child, I like communicating with foreigners and so I believe speaking is not bad.

On the first day, when I saw my level, I felt upset and so worried. “Oh my God. Why? My English Level is supposed to be better!”

But my thoughts have changed now. I know my English skills is lacking. I hate grammar and because of my character - extremely introverted and withdrawn - I feel too much tension in Speaking.

The English level or grade is just a number. One should also consider their attitude and determination. With this, your English level can slowly change. The important thing is I know my English skill is lacking and it needs to be developed. In my case, while preparing for our presentation, I realized I have more confidence and I’m really happy that I know more about the English language.

Self-confidence is the most important key to English Speaking.

Believe in yourself, trust your potential!

My Ideal Future

I hope to be a Korean Teacher just like Teacher Kitting in the novel “Dead Poet's Society”. In the future, I also want to be a writer; someone who writes novels and poems well enough to win a Novel Prize! But after my conversation with my FTA and Professor, I added one thing to my dream. Someday, I want my writings to have an accurate translation in English as possible and publish it in many countries. This dream will come true someday. I will study English more with happiness and not only to get a good score in TEPS, TOEIC, TOEFL (which may be stressful to many students). Finally, someday I will go to another country. I will earn my degree in Education and I will learn to develop education too in order to contribute to the Korean Education.

I am very happy to meet my precious teachers. I have so many Best Teachers. and I respect them truly. My morning class Professor is Richard; my afternoon class Professor is David; and my team Professor is Roger. Thank you very much for making the class great! Also, the Connors Brothers are both fun, and friendly.
