A Night of Treasure & Fun...JGEO2 Treasure Hunt

JGEO2 Treasure Hunt was very exciting and fun. The students got to enjoy two rounds of activities during the night. First, is the JGEO2 Mission Possible Series, and the second set is the JGEO2 modifield version of Running Man which was named the Walking Man. 

During the JGEO2 Mission Possible Series, students had to go through series of stations to complete the missions.

For the Walking Man, the rules of the game is the same with Running Man. The main mission is  to detach other team members’ name tags. The pairs (‘one girl – one boy’ pair game) were tied with paper handcuffs. If the paper handcuffs are torn apart, the pair will be out. So it is important that they hold hands all the time.

Interesting GEO 16

GEO (Global English Outreach) program has a lot of interesting activities.

The first thing is the Global Lounge visits. In Global Lounge, we have our OBF (Of the student, By the student, For the student) meeting and Foreign Teaching Assistant (FTA meeting). During my first OBF meeting, I thought it will be very difficult for me, but it wasn't as complex as I thought it would be. The OBF masters didn't use a lot of highfalutin English words. In addition, the topic we discussed about was very familiar. For instance, we talked about what I am expecting for my university life, school club, etc. At present, I already finished two OBF meetings. I hope that I will be an OBF master some day. For the FTA meeting, it was actually a little difficult for me since FTA meeting involves English conversation with foreigners. Nonetheless, it is more thrilling than OBF meeting since we share a lot of things and learn about different culture.

The second thing is the Speed Quiz. During the second day of GEO program, we had a Speed Quiz team competition, playing with teammates. I saw and did a lot of Speed Quiz in Korean, but speed quiz in English was the first time for me. So I was very excited. Speed Quiz, not only did we solve quizzes but we also cheered for the team. Each team's cheer was very different, and each team looked very promising. I am happy that my team, Guyana, placed 3rd in Speed Quiz.

The third thing I want to share is the Treasure Hunt. During the fourth day of G.E.O. program, We had the Treasure Hunt team competition. It's a game with a series of missions. We should collect clues to advance to the next station. There were various tasks such as dancing, drawing, guessing and walking the runway a.k.a. fashion show, etc. It was very interesting and everything was done in a hurry since it is each team’s goal to finish the race first. Luckily, our team Guyana garnered 2th place. I think it is one of the best in GEO program.

Indeed, GEO program has a lot of program. They are all interesting and fun. I really like G.E.O.

Closer together after GEO16 Treasure Hunt

Team India won 4th place at the recently concluded GEO 16 Treasure Hunt. At first, we planned to separate the team members so we can search for the stations quickly. Other teams didn’t separate so we thought our strategy was so nice and perfect, but it didn’t turn out to be as great as we thought. We changed our strategy and started to look for the stations together. We didn’t quite understand what the first clue meant and even walked past our first station and we found ourselves lost. Suddenly, we realized that we passed the station. We got there too late. So for the other stations we did it really fast, except IH 267, the Scavenger Hunt station. In that station, we were tasked to pick a color and look for words with that color. Afterwards, we have to arrange them in the proper order. We chose khaki colored words but we weren’t able to find them. After thirty minutes, we changed to another color set of words and we were able to finish the mission in five minutes! After we finished doing the missions on all of the stations we went back to the gym and we were the 5th team to arrive but since another team was still solving their equation and we solved ours in just 30 seconds we were able to get 4th place instead. The Treasure Hunt activity made us very tired, but all our team members enjoyed it. We had a lot of fun and we did all stations with great teamwork. Thanks to The Treasure Hunt, our team members got closer to each other.

Students displayed Amazing Teamwork during the GEO 16 Treasure Hunt

“Ahoy, my hearties!! Weigh anchor and hoist the mizzen!” said the captain of the ship as the treasure hunt of the GEO 16 begins. The sailors (Team Guyana, Panama, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Seychelles, India, and Singapore) started their journey at the Gym of International Hub (IH) Building. As they sail through the vast journey of the event, they need to complete each obstacle and achieve their mission. The main goal is to collect the treasures scattered around the IH building. To collect these, each team must finish the challenges in the designated stations around the said location. After a team finishes a challenge in one station, they will get one national treasure. Once they collected eight national treasures, the team must race to the gym to do the final mission.

The final game entails solving for number one using all the materials (numbers and symbols) which students will get in each station. Once in the gym, the teams need to spread the numbers and symbols they collected and make a mathematical formula. Once they are finished, they should inform the TA to check their answers and declared if it is right or wrong.

The Stations

There are eight stations to be completed by each team. We have Station 1: The Singing room, 2: I am a Super Model, 3: Hold that Yoga Pose. 4: The Pictionary, 5: The Scavenger Hunt, 6: Paint a Picture, 7: The Speed Match and 8: The Blind Maze. After the team finishes each challenge in each station, they should be able to acquire one treasure and the clue for the location of the next station.

The station number 2 which is “I am a Super Model” boosts the creativity of each team. They need to be innovative in making super model clothes by using newspaper. Who would have known that we have these great super models in CUK? Great job to each team!

Another station is the “Paint a Picture” lead by TA Gellene. The rule is to pose as dictated by the TA. This station challenges the imagination of each team as they should come out with a striking pose. “Paint a picture of GEO OFFICE!.” If I were in their place, how will present that? Hmmm…

These are just a few of the stations that they need to complete. These tasks made each team develop their knowledge, improve their communication skills, discover their hidden talents and build a new camaraderie. Indeed, it was a night of thrill and adventure.

For the second time, congratulations Team New Zealand for winning the first place!! Team Guyana and Team Panama placed second and third respectively! It was a group effort and everyone did stick with each other. It was indeed great to see students enjoy and have fun at the same time. A big round of applause to everyone! Cheers!!!

Ready! Get Set! GO! The words that marked the beginning of a tiring yet fulfilling GEO 15 Treasure Hunt Competition

Ready! Get Set! GO!

These three words marked the beginning of the GEO 15 Treasure Hunt Team Competition which was held last January 25. This is probably the most exhausting yet opportune activity for GEO students to exercise their mental as well as their physical capabilities under limited time and pressure from their rival teams. Indeed, GEO has once again brought the teams’ competitive spirit into the fore, ultimately proving that neither English nor the challenges stopped them from trying to win the coveted first prize.

Without a doubt, the challenges appeared to be tailor-fit to give clues on who will the best teams among the best teams in GEO Winter Camp 2012. Let us then examine how the teams were able to cope up with them and how they managed to turn such tiring moments into fun and memorable ones. If teams were able to solve the clues to get Bo Ram’s station (The Singing Room) in Global Lounge’s Meeting Room A, they had to do a series of dance moves in All the single ladies, a song by Beyonce. How seemingly complicated the dance moves were, someone had to do it in each team! Good thing Bo Ram was so kind to allow the other team members to sing the song instead (just imagine if that is not the ca

se). Only perfect harmony between dancing and singing can the teams move on to their next clue.

If there is a basketball court around, there should be a basketball game in Treasure Hunt too, don’t you think? Revan’s game (Guessing the idiom) gave those who have athletic prowess a chance to use their basketball skills for the sake of their team. One successful shot after another is not only met with great applause from their peers but also leading them to tidbits of hints for the real clue. Even the girls had a great time trying out their luck shooting from their advantageous position too! Time out! Move on to the next activity!

One, two, three... Here's the ball

Teams who were able to find Gellene’s station (The imaginary trip to the beach) in front of the second floor conference room fast are worthy of praise. But to be able to create a human picture frame depicting lifestyle in a beach is another. Teams scrambled to assign roles among themselves like sunbathing, swimming, beach volleyball or even organizing a drinking event around a campfire. Imagination was the only limit hindering the teams and it is not that difficult to move on to the next clue.

With Mario at the rock-scissors-paper station, his game (Different Action) is probably the easiest among the challenges in that Treasure Hunt night. However, Mario appeared to have mastered the covert art of hiding, leaving the teams at a loss and even questioning the validity of the clue they have at hand. After spotting Mario, teams would have to play the rock-scissors-paper game with him but with a catch: they have to let Mario win in order to win! A bit confusing but the teams could finish faster than expected.

Teams once again find themselves at the gymnasium but they have to find China at the running track at the second floor. Another test of physical and mental endurance, the only way to get through China’s station (Hold that Yoga Pose) is to imitate the positions depicted at the papers posted on the walls of the gymnasium. While it may not be a problem for some, those who do not exercise have to exert extra effort. Doing things together, no matter how difficult they may be, tightens the bonds of the team further.

Before leaving the gymnasium, they should not forget to pass by Peter’s ingenious challenge (Blind Maze) which I would call the minefield game. Moving at the other side of the area while avoiding stepping on paper cups is easy enough, the need to use blindfolds by the two team members increased the game’s difficulty by 200%. The only way to get through is for the blindfolded to listen carefully to the voice who can act as their eyes. Trust, agility, and luck are ingredients for victory in this game.

Teams had to look for Ezzy somewhere in front of the second floor elevators. Looking for her should not be a difficult one but the challenge (I am a Super model) required a strong heart that disregards shame in favor of fame. Participants had to dress up improvised clothes made of newspaper and they should make an atmosphere of a popular and stylish fashion show. Other team members help by shouting and cheering for their models. When directions are followed properly, they could finish it clean and fast. Can you recognize what I'm drawing? Go teammates ^_^

Another fun and challenging assignment that the team has to go through is Andrew’s station (the Pictionary) which was situated in GEO classroom. Andrew showed a list of words for the team representative to draw, while other team members tried to guess the word that is being drawn by their representative. Categories include thing, movie, animal. Indeed the whole team counts on the acting prowess of their team representative and tries their best to guess the correct word.

After getting all the paper money from the TAs, team members have to return to the gymnasium and create a self-fulfilling formula with the basic mathematical processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They must arrive at a specific number in order to win. Blessed are the teams who have people who like mathematics since it could be a torture for those who don’t.
