GEO 16 Speed Quiz garners mixed reactions from students

GEO 16’s first team competition was successfully administered. In order to solicit some feedbacks, students from Class 1-2 were asked to complete the following statement.

“Tuesday night, February 7, 2012, GEO 16 held a team competition, the Speed Quiz. My team…”

Here's what the students shared…

Yoo Ga Hyun: My team, India, finished seventh. What I didn’t like about the “Speed Quiz” was that India went first hence, we couldn’t prepare much. Even though, we played well during the first round, we finished seventh, because there were more difficult words during the second round. Despite the results, I still think India is the best team. I think that our team played well. I think Team India stands a good chance of winning the “Treasure Hunt.”

Kim Min Sung: My team, New Zealand, finished first. What I enjoyed about the “Speed Quiz” was that it brought about a lot of excitement. During the first round, we got only three points, but in the second round, we got nine points. So, we finished first. I love my team! LOL ^_~

Lim Si Won: My team, Panama, finished second. The Speed Quiz was funny and exciting. I want to play the game again… one more game please! If I were to play the game again I would do better than the previous one. For me, the time limit was very short. I think we needed more time.

The audience cheers and applauds for their respective teams.

And the winner is...Team New Zealand

Students looking forward to making good memories this semester

In starting a new semester, students like us experience some fears and excitement. We do not know of what lies ahead during the semester, what to expect for our course work. Questions like: will I be able to get along with my classmates pop out of our minds.

Photos of Class 2-5 during their sharing session

During our class sharing session, we found out that most of us get excited about meeting new people and making friends from our classes, including the G.E.O program. Moreover, through the G.E.O program, we want to improve our English listening and speaking skills. For us, we think this is an important part of this semester. Also we are really looking forward to going to membership trainings (MTs) with people who are in the same major or department such as ours, attending festivals and joining other activities.

However, we also have some fears about several things. We are a little bit scared because even as early as third week of classes, we already have a lot of homework and reports to turn in. We are afraid of speaking English and taking English classes. For example, in English 1 class, we have to translate English textbooks to Korean and explain about it. Sometimes, we have difficulties in understanding what the professor is saying.

We have mixed emotions right now, but in our opinion, we have more positive feelings than negative feelings. We’re very optimistic about things and we want to make the most out of this semester. We want to enjoy our school life and make a lot of good memories with new people around us. Actually, at present, we are already having a good time.

For me, GEO Program is...

Below is a compilation of student's feedbacks regarding the GEO Program:

“I think the program is getting better compared to last year. I feel it is really helpful now. During the program, I had great opportunity to speak in English. But I think this would be better if the program have more systematic “English in Action” program like English Clinic. If it is more systematic, it will really be great.” - Anonymous

“GEO Program is the pride of Catholic University of Korea! It gives students confidence in using the English language. It includes club activities like pop song club, drama club, art club, and so on. Through this program, we learned English in more exciting ways. Why don’t you enjoy with us? GEO could help you improve your English.” – Kang Bomi

“GEO Program makes me speak English easily. During this program, I met many good friends in my class. Although, my personal time decreased, I think GEO Program is worth attending. I recommended GEO to all students of CUK, because in this program they can spend their personal time developing their English skills and their social skills as well.” – Park Nuri

“I think GEO Program is a good program. Although I think it takes too much time, for me, it was very fun. I had a great time talking in English.” - Anonymous

“Wow! GEO is fantastic program! Have you ever heard about GEO program in Catholic University? There are many people involved in different majors and year levels so you can make new and different friends. This program is four times in a year; first semester, summer vacation, second semester and winter vacation. I recommend this program during the vacation. I’m sure that you can make friends and be good in English. Why don’t you join the GEO program?” –HyunYeong

“I want to have more GEO class time (e.g. three time a week). Actually, in GEO class I used Korean very often. So I feel very sorry and I really am regretful. So I think it is better for students who participate in GEO class to follow the rule and prevent using Korean.” - Anonymous

“I met many friends in GEO program. All my classmates are ladies so I was surprised at first. But that is a chance to talk much frankly. I want to keep in touch with my class members later. I will remember fun times in GEO program.” – Jee Won

“I think we need a unified curriculum for each level. Last semester we used a textbook but some students said that is too boring to learn but if we will not use a textbook, at least we need a specific plan. So I think that’s the biggest problem in this semester GEO.” - Anonymous

“I think that GEO program is good for student. First, there are many good program- English clinics, Colloquium, conversation contest, party, etc. Second, GEO class has free atmosphere so all students don’t get stress about English. Third, GEO class is good for improving English. I like GEO program so I’ll participate the GEO Program again.” - Anonymous
