August 20, 2010
The fantastic summer vacation has finally ended, for the GEO7 students this summer vacation is one of the worthwhile vacations they ever had. Do you want to know why? It’s because they made a right decision enrolling to an extraordinary program at the Catholic University of Korea: The Seventh Global English Outreach Program.
The program Started July 26, 2010 and ended August 20, 2010, a short camp for some but for the GE07 students it was a long journey. Now that it is finally over, they could simply smile and say what a great journey it has been.
Meanwhile, may I ask you to relax, take a deep breath, as we travel back to the great journey of the GEO7 students.
GEO7 students, it is not the end, but simply the beginning of the new challenges in life, a more confident and empowered YOU.
Cheers!!! See you on the Cross Roads!

The much awaited Team Drama Contest...
August 19th 2010, 06:00 PM – GEO 7’s Team Drama started in front of all the GEO Professors, TAs and FTAs.
GEO Drama is the biggest event in our GEO program. When the GEO program started, every team prepared something for their Team Drama. Every team prepared to their script and something like drama stuff and other things needed.
The first team to present was Team Ireland. The title of Ireland's Drama was “GEO Break”. This Drama revolved around the story of the students who planned to escape from the GEO Program. “GEO Break” is a parody to the American drama series “Prison Break”!
Do you know Mr. Charming?
Mr. Charming is a member of Team Ireland. He is the guy who shined the most in Team Ireland’s drama. I think he is really the most charming guy in GEO.
The second presenting team was Team Australia. The title of Australia's Drama was “Cinderella”. So obviously, their drama’s topic was also Cinderella.
The guy who shined the most in this drama is Eun Taek (Cinderella) and Man Gap (Cinderella's father). Eun Taek is man but his role in this drama was Cinderella so it was fun. And also, Man Gap's character was so fun, too!
The third team was Team New Zealand. The title of New Zealand's Drama is “You Know What They Did Last Summer”. This Drama's Topic was about a mermaid who met a human guy one summer day. The role of the mermaid was given to Hyung Gu and the most charming point of this drama was Hyung Gu’s scene. It was really, really, really fun but most people say it was disgusting.
But still, it was so fun! Wasn't it?
The 4th team is Team Jamaica.
The final team who presented their drama was Team Jamaica. The title of Jamaica's Drama was “NANTA”. This Drama was so perfect and so fun, too. So, most people enjoyed this drama and with this, they believed that this drama should get the 1st prize in the competition.
And The Winner of GEO's Team Drama Competition is…*drum roll*…Team Jamaica!
Team Jamaica's Team Drama, “NANTA”, showed the audience their powerful and fantastic performance. So, their drama overpowered the other team's drama. ^^
As the producer of Team Jamaica’s drama, I'm so proud. However, you must know something… every team’s drama was so cooooool!

Amazing Race
Hi! Everyone! This is June Sung Lee in 4-1 and my nickname is Mr. Charming.
Today I’ll introduce our 4th Team Competition in GEO which took place last August 17.
Its name is Amazing Race. Do you know what it is?
If you don’t know this game, I’ll explain it.
It has four sub-games.
First was the “Water Gun Game” that was played in Tele-Tobi Park. This game’s rule was very simple - Just fill in the cup by using the water gun. But it was very difficult so, most of team wasted their time in this game.
However, Team Ireland member Yong-Heon played very well because he finished his military service only two months ago.
Water Gun Game
The second was Mission Impossible. Mission Impossible took place at Conference Hall. The setting had many ropes and our main task was to avoid these ropes as we pass. I heard some information about this game so I wore short pants. Many people said I was disgusting. ^^
This mission is just IMPOSSIBLE!
Third, was Story Board…
The Story Board game was done by making a story but we had to choose from a set of words and we have to use those words. So many kinds of strange sentences were made through this game.
TAs Regina and Hee Jung in Story Board
Finally, the fourth game was Paragraph Arrangement and it was played in Global Lounge Meeting Room A. This game’s rule was also simple; just complete the story by arranging the paragraphs in the correct order. But there were too many paragraphs, so we needed a lot of time.
Paragraph Arrangement manned by Prof. Peter and TA Katherine
In this race, Team Ireland won because our strategy was so good. I'm proud of Team Ireland and really appreciate our team members.
GO Ireland!!
GEO 7's Amazing Race Champion! Team Ireland!
Fun Radio!
GEO students have to visit Global Lounge at 17:00 for GEO Radio two times a week.
So, Team New Zealand have to go on Wednesday and Thursday.
Team Australia should go on Monday and Wednesday.
Team Ireland goes on Monday and Tuesday and Team Jamaica goes on Tuesday and Thursday.
When we go there to listen to the GEO Radio, each team's member must be the guest of GEO Radio.
Sometimes the GEO Radio DJ invites some special guests such as Young Jun and Ara (GEO's lovely couple). Also, the DJ remembers Seung Jae because he was very active in GEO Radio time.

Team Ireland

Team Jamaica
Every guest is given some questions in advance so the guest prepares special answers.
In our case, we had to prepare something about special places to travel.
For example I introduced Seoul Land which is "not in Seoul."
Also, other team members must guess the correct answers for the GEO Radio quiz on-air.
If someone sends a text message with the correct answer on their first try, the person gets a bonus point card.
We personally think that Team New Zealand(our team!) is the most passionate team in GEO Radio. ^_^

Entertaining and Knowledge-packed Presentations
3-1 and 4-1 Final Presentation Contest
All teams decided on their topics differently and they all fitted their own individual taste. The effort each team put into their presentations was obvious because they appeared to be having such fun on stage. There was a difference between the levels; level 2 seemed to be focused on humor whereas other levels were focused on more serious subjects.
(2-1)
Class 2-1 Presenters
The winning presentation, “How to propose” was affective because the ladies dramatized their ideas in such a humorous way that was clear for everyone in the audience. The most popular among the audiences and other students was the “secret proposal” where a CD is prepared and presented to their partner at a place of their choice such as a restaurant, park or nightclub.
(2-2)
The 2-2 winning team was the best from all GEO classes. They had put in a lot of effort to search and research the information for their presentation; the presentation was sensual but even with the few hiccups they projected their script and drama across to the audience really well and fluent. Especially, their acting was impressive.
It is a good opportunity that people should know about Turkey’s Charm. Their presentation gave us a lot of information about Turkey, such as its culture, food, history, and beautiful places, among others. Joo Hyeong’s belly dancing was really good which can still recalled by the viewers until now. However, they exceeded the time limit and presented many powerpoint slides.
The winning presentation was excellent as all the team members were clear with their presentation. They also finished within the time limit.
Overall, the presentations were an enjoyment to watch. Every presentation provided all the viewers with knowledgeable and entertaining information that would certainly be every useful and valuable.
2-1 First Prize Winners: Min Jeong Kim, Jung Hyun Lim, and Jeong Yoon Lee
with their topic "How to Propose"
2-1 Second Prize Winners: Dong Cheol Yoo and Yeong Heon Kim
with their topic "How to Go on a Diet"
2-2 First Prize Winners: Su Yeong Jin, Dae Yu Han, and Geon Hee Lee
with their topic "How to Recieve a Candy"
2-2 Second Prize Winners: Kum Mi Yoon and Ji Won Lee
with their topic "How to Enjoy Seoul"
3-1 First Prize Winners: Joo Hyung Cho and Young Woo Kim
with their topic "Do you know Turkey's charm?"
3-1 Second Prize Winners: Eun Taek Roh and Yoon Mi Shin with their topic "Call me & Look at me - Huh Kyoung Young-" |
4-1 First Prize Winners: June Sung Lee, Go Eun Lee, and Ji Young Ju with their topic "If I were the President of CUK"

Busy 3rd Week in GEO 7
In this week, we had to do many things.
First, on Wednesday & Thursday we participated in the Presentation contest!
We prepared our contest for a week, and every team made an effort to give the best presentation. Wednesday was the presentation day of classes 2-1 and 2-2. Their topics were "Life in G.E.O." and "How to do something". They made a speech about "Going on a diet", "How to Propose"and "White day candy" and so on. I think they had many good ideas about their topic. Their pronunciation was excellent, and they even performed well.
Thursday was Level 3-1, 4-1's presentation day. First, level three's topic were about their role model and the country that people should visit. The level 4's topic were "Can we make a difference?" and "If I were the president of CUK". In my case especially, I expected so much on that day, because I like to give a presentation about something. My team's topic was "Can we make a difference for the world?". In my part I told about Nuclear energy and Stem Cell. The topic was a bit serious. However, it was interesting because I posted many interesting video clips. Eventually, the audiences concentrated on my presentation, but we won the third prize. Although we were disappointed, I was satisfied with our presentation because we did our best.
On Wednesday August 11th, we had the 4th team competition. It was the Country Quiz! The procedure of the game was to prepare fifteen multiple-choice questions of their own team and to study about other teams in advance. In our team's case, New Zealand , each person made three questions and then gathered them and chose the best fifteen. All students chose one answer among A, B or C. It was similar to O.X quiz. The students who answered all questions correctly and survived for the last round got points for their team. We prepared questions about each country's capital, famous city, highest mountain, famous people and so on.
In the competition, our team New Zealand won the 1st prize.
Aside from the team rank, I believe it was a precious time where we had the opportunity to study about different countries.

Mix and mingle with new found friends
Enjoy the luscious fruits and chips in GEO's Wine and Cheese Party
Once again, the Wine and Cheese Party proved to be a very successful event. Where else can you enjoy good conversations with your friends or new acquaintances over a glass of wine, with chips, and the tender yet salty taste of the cheese? Of course, it is only in this party. But not only that, because for this GEO 7 summer camp, different kinds of fruits were included such as cherries, oranges, and bananas, among others, to provide everyone in the party more choices of what to eat.
However, the time seemed not to be enough for everyone in the party. Many people still wanted to stay longer and converse with their fellow campers and new-found friends from different countries, such as the Philippines, United States, and England.
A place to casually chat with professors
A place to catch up with friends
A place to take pictures ^_^
Nevertheless, this indicates that the Wine and Cheese Party was indeed enjoyed by everyone who came. Conversations were almost anything under the sun, from sports, entertainment to campus life and love life. The Wine and Cheese Party continues to give everyone a very optimistic, relaxing, and knowledgeable atmosphere in learning how to speak English proficiently through conversations.

Club Updates...
The Coffee Club goes to O.B.F for club activity time. The members enjoy a cup of coffee; play board games, or talk about anything with friends, or sit in comfortable chairs and take a rest. Mainly I play board games with my friends but when I feel bored, I play simple games. However the board games are more fun.
The Coffee Club in Global Lounge!
The Toastmasters Club is club for students to improve their speaking abilities. They play simple games. They also prepare individual presentations, and make the presentations each week. In addition, they talk about any topic or play quiz games. Some students prepare presentations or talk about something. They build their confidence. Especially the topic of the day, students cannot prepare it. So students improve their conversational skills because students have to make impromptu speeches.
I heard that in the Idiom Club, the members learn idioms and slangs through simple games. They said that they retain the idioms and slangs for a long time because when they solved the quiz, it is quite entertaining. Also what is interesting is that the winners in the game choose the kind of performance for the losers. For example dancing or singing a song or etc. Losers in the game have to perform what the winners selected. Watching the performance seems to be very entertaining.
I heard that all members in the Gift Club have a secret friend. Before the end of the G.E.O program, the member should present a gift to their secret friend. If your secret friend already knew who the member is, you ask carefully your friend “What do you want?” or if your secret friend is a new friend in GEO program, you have to guess what he/she wants. I think that is the charm of the Gift Club.

Fun and Cheers in GEO Sports Night!
Last Wednesday, August 4, we had a team competition, Sports.
We played games at the gym. Before we started the game, we had time to listen to each team’s catch phrase. The first team was Jamaica. They harmonized the word “Jamaica”. The second team was Ireland and the third team was New Zealand. New Zealand team’s catch phrase was acting like Maori, and they shouted about winning the game. And the last team was my team Australia. We parodied a Korean baseball team’s catch phrase. We sang a song and danced.
Team Ireland with their Team Cheer!
Team New Zealand shouting that they will win the game!
My Team Australia portraying our parody ^_^
After performing catch phrases, we had a game: tying sneaker strings to become the longest. We stood in straight lines, and when the whistle blew, we started to untie strings, and after that we retied them in a straight line. And this game New Zealand won. Next, we tied the strings to our shoes. That game Ireland won. All of us had fun and we laughed a lot.
Who'd have imagine that placing back our shoe laces would be difficult?
Tada!!! All done!
The second game was “Catch the Tail”. In the first match, Australia lost and Ireland lost. And in the final match, team New Zealand and team Jamaica met and fought. After playing a seesaw game, eventually New Zealand won. But there was another match left. Team Australia and team Ireland met and played “Catch the Tail” for third place.
Catch my tail, if you can!
The third game was basketball shoot-out. It was 2 rounds, and we ran to the opposite side of the gym. Then we picked up a basketball, soccer ball, volleyball and a rugby ball and came back to the start line to shoot the balls that we picked up. In the first round, Ireland won and the second round, Jamaica won. My team Australia was 3rd in the first round and 2nd in the second one. Our team was so sad because we couldn’t be the first in all rounds.
Ireland's strategic meeting?
The fourth game was to make a goal like soccer but we had a smaller goalpost and we even used a volleyball for kicking. In this game, team New Zealand won, and my team Australia got 4th place. We thought we could make a goal by just kicking the ball straight and slow, but it was not an easy thing because the goalpost was very small.
Sports Night Champion: Team New Zealand!
Then finally there were tied teams so except Australia, my team, they played relay running. Team Jamaica won, and all sports competitions were finished.

G.E.O. Team Competitions
What is this "Team Competition" program?
There are four teams in GEO 7 (Australia, Jamaica, Ireland, and New Zealand). Every week, they have Team Competitions and it is their goal to gather as many points as they can to be hailed as the GEO Cup Champion.
Team Competitions take place every Wednesdays. For this year's summer GEO, the Speed Quiz is scheduled on the first week; Sports Game on the second week; Country Quiz on the third week; and finally, the Team Drama Competition on the fourth week.
Speed Quiz
Try to guess many words as fast as you can!
During the first week of GEO 7, we played Speed Quiz. There were players on three chairs. The first person explains or describes the word on the screen and another person would try to guess it. After he guesses the word, he goes back on the chair and the person who described the word would have to guess the next one. The champion of the Speed Quiz was Team Australia.
In my opinion, it would have been better to share the words before the game so that the speed of the game would be faster.
Sports Game
The Teams in the Gym
The sports game was held in the Gym on the second week of GEO 7. There were seven games played during this event. Only one team would win the first prize and get a point in each game. The first game was to untie the string of all members’ shoes. The team who could make the longest line would be the winner. The second game was to tie the string back to the shoes. The third game was "Catch the Tail" and the fourth game was an improvised basketball game. There are four shooters and four rebounders. The team who gets the most balls in the hoop for 3 minutes would be the winner. The fifth game was the same basketball game but the students who were rebounders would have to be the shooters and vice versa. The sixth game was soccer. All of the team members had to kick the ball one by one and of course, make a goal because the one team that scored most would be the winner. The last game was a "Relay Race". In the end, the champion of the Sports Game was Team New Zealand!
In my opinion, it would have been better to give scores to the first-4points, the second-3points, third-2points and fourth-1point.
There are two more team competitions left for this camp, Country Quiz and the Team Drama Competition. We want all of the G.E.O students to enjoy the team competition and win together.
