The
Little Prince, by Antoine de
Saint-Exupéry.
The
little Prince was first published in 1943 by French Author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and has since been translated into over 200 languages and sold
more than 150million copies worldwide. It is a book that is enjoyed by both
adults and children due to not only its pretty pictures but its engaging and easy
to understand storyline.
Without giving the whole story away, here it is in a
nutshell;
The story is about a little prince who falls down to earth
from an asteroid (called B-612). He comes across the narrator in the Sahara
Desert who has crashed his plane. The story takes place over eight days between
these two characters as they are stranded in the desert and with the Narrator
trying to repair his plane. The prince begins to recount his life story to the
narrator and we learn that the prince is lonely and in need of company. He
tells the narrator that he set off on a journey around the solar system hoping
to make friends but kept running into people who were not interested in
befriending him such as a drunk and a dodgy businessman. After eight days of recounting his life story
and the narrator almost dying of thirst (together they find a well), the story
ends as the Prince leaves in mysterious circumstances to find his lover (the
rose) and with the narrator asking us to let him know if we ever spot the
prince.
The story is a pleasure to read as the author contracts the
little prince with a number of adult characters while he jumps from planet to
planet looking for friends and for his love.
I call this book a gentle and friendly story about love,
friendship and self-discovery which is a thought provoking and enjoyable read
for people of all ages and interests.
