What consumed my Spring 2014 Semester (TA Blog)

Second Semester is almost coming to an end and seems like I haven’t accomplished all my objectives yet. This summary tries to single out my achievements from those that were apparently substandard efforts occurred between March and May 2014. A reflection I need in order to keep me motivated; I still have a whole month of June though to cross out the remaining targets from my checklist.

Team USA dominates the JGEO2 camp

Team USA has been dominating the JGEO2 camp. In the past two team competitions, Speed Quiz and Game Show, Team USA has been winning the events.

The JGEO2 Speed Quiz was held last July 31, while the JGEO 2 Game Show was held last August 1. Both of the events were held in the International Hub Global Lounge.

FTAs Keith, Kerwin, Morris, Enrique, Tin and Mario were present in the event. KTAs Jinwoo, Ilene and Yeyoung were also there as well.

Congratulations to Team USA. For the hardworking Foreign Teaching Assistants and Korean Teaching Assistants congratulations too. We really appreciate your efforts...

JGEO2 kicks off with a blast ^^

JGEO2 kicked off last July 29. The Korean orientation was held at three in the afternoon. Afterwards, they were given a campus tour. Students get a glimpse of the whole campus.

Since this is the first day of JGEO2, the management also planned a Social Evening, some ice breaker games were administered by the foreign teaching assistants to help participants be more acquainted with each other. It was a fun moment for everyone. The students enjoyed the games that were prepared for them. JGEO2 was a blast indeed.

A Selfless Day: Volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital

Starting 2010, Yeoksam Global Village in cooperation with St. Mary’s Hospital in Gangnam-gu, Seoul has been organizing volunteer activities for foreigners in St. Mary’s Hospital. It aims to promote social responsibility as well as multiculturalism to foreigners as well as to local patients in the hospital.

The range of activities that the volunteers can do varies from preparing medical supplies up to giving entertainment and support to the young patients confined in the hospital.

“It has been always important for me why I am doing a certain task. With that, I see the importance of what I am assigned to”, Karina, one of the volunteers, said. Volunteers were assigned to clean and prepare gauzes which apparently are being used during the operations and/or emergency. Other medical supplies being prepared are the aprons which are used for operations, among others.

The volunteers are also being assigned to entertain the children in the regular children wards as well as the Children BMT (Bone Marrow Transplant) ward, where most of the patients are undergoing their treatments for leukemia. Children’s age ranges from 0-18 years old. The volunteers sing, draw, play and learn together with the young patients.

According to Karina, “Knowing how important the tasks are makes what we do more fruitful. It has always struck me to see how young the patients can be, yet they suffer from the needles, medicines, treatments and operations that they have to undergo. Sometimes, with their bald head, I cannot even identify whether the childhappy to go back every month, seeing the smiles and giggles, the cute little faces of the children. But every time I go back, I am hoping not to see the same faces again, hoping to see lesser patients every time I visit, hoping that these kids fully recovered and are out of the hospital already.”

These range of activities that volunteers do, do not only help the patients and the hospital. It also gives an opportunity to both foreigners and Koreans to embrace globalization, multiculturalism and differences amongst people. After each activity, volunteers are sure to appreciate one’s life more, its beauty and the consequence that comes with it.

Filipino talents sweep Arirang's All Together Top Talent Contest by storm

Arirang TV, in cooperation with Yeoksam Global Village, organized an event to promote multiculturalism here in Korea. This event, All Together Top Talent Contest of Arirang TV, is an avenue for multicultural residents of Korea to come together to showcase their hidden talents and skills. Numerous foreigners took part in this event. Last April 2, the Arirang talent show was held in Nonhyun 2-dong Cultural Center. During the said talent show, foreigners from Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, the Philippines, USA (Americans and Korean Americans), Romania, England, among other countries, joined the event. Performances include singing (traditional songs, songs in their national language, pop songs and Korean songs), dancing (performing their national dance and break dancing, etc), cooking their traditional meal, martial arts exhibition, to name a few.

Two scholars, Raechelle Montalbo and Gracey Maquiniana performed in the said talent show. Raechelle sang a Korean song 가로수 그늘 아래 서면 - When I Stand under the Roadside Tree and played the guitar. Her heartfelt concert captivated the hearts of those present during the show. Gracey, on the other hand, danced a Tahitian dance. Her performance was undeniably mesmerizing. Indeed due to their noteworthy presentations, both won grand prize and the 1st runner up respectively. It just shows how talented Filipinos are.
